Industry experts share insights at CII’s Indian Commercial Vehicle Conclave in Gurugram
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) hosted the 3rd edition of the Indian Commercial Vehicle Conclave (ICVC), bringing together industry leaders, experts, and visionaries to explore the transformative trends shaping India’s commercial vehicle (CV) industry. The event focused on pivotal megatrends and strategies aimed at contributing towards the national vision of Viksit Bharat.
Speaking at the event, Dr Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India said that the importance of Automotive Sector cannot be undermined as it contributes more than 7% to the national GDP and is a huge employment generator. Government of India acknowledges this and is promoting the importance of shifting of powertrains to alternate fuels and green transportation through focused interventions like PLI schemes which is not only for the Automotive OEMs but also supports the value chain comprising of the component manufacturers.
He complimented Confederation of Indian Industry for creating platforms like the Indian Commercial Vehicle Conclave as these create opportunities for learning by sharing as well as for cross pollination of ideas to happen from Industry to Government and vice versa.
Mr Girish Wagh, Chairman, CII ICVC and Executive Director of Tata Motors Ltd emphasized the transformative juncture at which India’s CV industry stands, driven by ambitious government policies, rapid urbanization, and economic growth.
Mr Wagh presented several crucial data points, highlighting the significance of the current transformative phase in India’s CV industry. He highlighted that India’s urban population is expected to reach 600 million by 2031, driving increased demand for CVs in sectors such as construction, logistics, and public transportation. Projected GDP growth of 6-7% and initiatives like Make in India are further boosting demand for both heavy and light CVs. He appreciated the National Logistics Policy and the PM Gatis Shakti initiative launched by the Government of India as these will lay down a framework for significant reduction in the logistics costs.
Speaking at the Conclave, Mr Abhimanyu Sharaff, Vice Chairman, CII Haryana and Executive Director, Vikas Group, emphasized the critical role of the Indian CV sector in driving economic growth and achieving national sustainability goals. He outlined CII’s strategic initiatives, focusing on regulatory engagement, workforce upskilling, and technology adoption to enhance efficiency, safety, and environmental performance.
Mr Sharaff concluded by highlighting the importance of inclusive growth and sustainability in realizing India@100, urging stakeholders to work collaboratively towards a prosperous and environmentally responsible future.
Mr Nishant Arya, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, JBM Group highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change and environmental degradation. He highlighted that global transportation sector accounts for approximately 24% of direct CO2 emissions from fuel combustion and therefore it becomes our shared responsibility to address this serious concern by use of technology, transition to alternate and green fuels.
Speaking on the immense potential that CV sector presents Mr Arya highlighted that there is a need to invest more in research and development; conducive regulatory and policy framework; skill development; and global collaboration and partnerships.
Mr Samrat Kapoor, Chairman, CII Faridabad and Managing Director, Super Screws Pvt Ltd highlighted the journey towards a Viksit Bharat, emphasizing the critical role of technological advancements, regulatory frameworks, and market dynamics. The conclave delved into themes like “Beyond Electric: Next Generation Powertrains and Low Carbon Fuels,” discussing the importance of hydrogen, biofuels, and alternative energy sources in achieving sustainable mobility.
The event featured three technical sessions focusing on megatrends, next-generation powertrains, and digital solutions for a sustainable ecosystem. Who’s who from the Indian CV industry attended the Conclave which received participation of more than 350 delegates from across the country.
