However, electric fleets face unique challenges that public charging points alone cannot address. Buses and trucks contribute a substantial 40% of global transport emissions, making their rapid electrification crucial for decarbonization. Although the electrified share of the bus market is rising, the demand for more flexible and efficient charging solutions is increasing.

ABB E-mobility’s HVC360 power cabinet, showcased at the UITP Global Public Transport Summit, represents a significant step in providing a crucial solution for depot charging, designed to seamlessly adapt to fleet operations. Mathijs Vaessen, Global Product Manager for Fast Charging Solutions for Heavy Commercial Vehicles at ABB E-mobility, elaborates on the versatility of the 360-degree charging solution, stating, “The true brilliance of ABB’s 360-degree charging solution lies in its adaptability. The product is designed to support four different charging ports, catering to various charging needs. It supports CCS Cables for Combined Charging System, commonly used in electric passenger vehicles, CZs Dropdown Cables, which represent an exciting innovation in charging technology, Pantograph charging for quick and easy overhead charging, and Reverse Pantograph for alternative ground-based charging solutions.”

Jason Giles further explains, “One might wonder what prompted the development of this groundbreaking product. According to ABB, it is a natural progression in our mission to provide more powerful and compact charging solutions. Despite having the same footprint as our previous products, the 360-degree charging solution packs over twice the power, making it more power-dense and cost-effective. This allows for easier integration into various charging locations, even in congested spaces.”

To ensure widespread adoption, ABB offers customers multiple revenue models. “Some prefer purchasing the product and availing maintenance through Service Level Agreement (SLA) contracts. Others seek financing or leasing options, effectively converting capital expenditure into operational expenditure. Additionally, ABB is exploring opportunities to own and operate charging systems on behalf of customers, providing a seamless charging experience,” explains Jason Giles.
