First fuel cell-powered heavy-duty truck scheduled to be launched in 2027

Isuzu Motors Limited and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. have announced a partnership agreement wherein Honda will develop and supply the fuel cell system for Isuzu’s fuel cell-powered heavy-duty truck. The truck is set to be introduced to the market in 2027.

Isuzu and Honda recognize the potential of fuel cell technology, which uses hydrogen as fuel and produces no CO2 emissions. They believe it can effectively contribute to achieving carbon neutrality in heavy-duty trucks, considering their requirements for large load capacity, long-time use, long-distance driving, and the need for quick refuelling.

Since signing an agreement in January 2020 to conduct joint research on heavy-duty trucks using fuel cells as the powertrain, the two companies have been working towards establishing a foundation for basic technologies. These technologies include ensuring the compatibility of fuel cells and heavy-duty trucks, as well as developing vehicle control technologies. Currently, the companies plan to begin demonstration testing of a prototype truck on public roads by the end of the current fiscal year (ending March 31, 2024). By leveraging their experience and knowledge gained through joint research, Isuzu and Honda aim to make progress in developing products that meet the performance and conditions required for heavy-duty trucks and satisfy customer needs.

Going forward, the companies will leverage their respective strengths to accelerate the development of clean, low-noise, and low-vibration fuel cell-powered heavy-duty trucks. This collaboration will contribute to the industry-wide shift towards clean energy, including logistics businesses, by promoting the proactive use of hydrogen energy. Both companies share the goal of realizing a carbon-neutral society and will strive towards achieving it.
