Ola Electric Becomes India’s First EV Maker to Get Certification for Rare-Earth-Free Motor

Two-wheelers

Ola Electric, India’s largest pure-play EV manufacturer, has achieved a major milestone by becoming the country’s first two-wheeler EV company to receive government certification for its in-house developed rare-earth-free ferrite motor. The breakthrough marks a significant step toward reducing dependence on imported permanent magnet motors and building a more sustainable and cost-efficient EV ecosystem in India.

The certification was granted by the Global Automotive Research Centre (GARC), Tamil Nadu, after Ola’s ferrite motor successfully passed all performance verification and mandatory motor power tests under AIS 041 standards, as notified by the Ministry of Road Transport, Government of India.

Test results confirmed that Ola Electric’s ferrite motor delivers performance comparable to rare-earth permanent magnet motors across both 7 kW and 11 kW variants. The in-house motor matches them in power, efficiency, and durability while significantly lowering costs and mitigating supply chain risks associated with rare-earth materials.

Originally unveiled at Ola’s ‘Sankalp 2025’ event in August, the ferrite motor now stands validated for production deployment. The company plans to integrate the new motor across its entire product lineup, strengthening its commitment to performance, affordability, and sustainable innovation for Indian consumers.
